Information, not medical advice
Everything on NaltrexoneReviews.com is general information and education. It is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment, and it doesn't replace the judgment of a licensed clinician who knows your history. Reading this site doesn't create a clinician–patient relationship with us or with anyone affiliated with us.
Don't start or stop medicine based on this site
Don't start, stop, or change the dose of naltrexone — or any medicine — without talking to your prescriber. Stopping drinking can be risky too: after frequent drinking, stopping can cause alcohol withdrawal, which can quickly become life-threatening (MedlinePlus). A clinician can help you plan safely.
Opioid warning
According to naltrexone's FDA label (naltrexone tablet prescribing information):
- It must not be used by people taking opioid pain medicines, people currently dependent on opioids (including methadone or buprenorphine), or people in opioid withdrawal.
- In people who are dependent on opioids it can bring on opioid withdrawal, in some cases severe enough to need hospital care.
- If opioid pain relief is needed in an emergency, more opioid than usual may be needed, and breathing can be suppressed more deeply and for longer.
- After naltrexone wears off, people may respond to lower doses of opioids than before, and fatal overdoses have been reported after treatment stopped.
Tell every clinician who treats you that you take naltrexone.
