Short answer
Vivitrol, the monthly shot, is the only brand of naltrexone still sold in the US for addiction treatment. Tablets are sold as generics under the drug's own name. The old tablet brands, ReVia and Depade, are gone. Contrave contains naltrexone but is a weight-management drug.1-4
Key takeaways
- Every naltrexone-only tablet in FDA's drug directory is a 50 mg generic: 45 listings under 21 company names.2
- Embeda and Troxyca ER contained naltrexone but were opioid painkillers. Both are discontinued.1
- Compounded naltrexone, including low-dose naltrexone (LDN, an off-label use), is not FDA-approved.5

Vivitrol is the only brand of the monthly shot
Vivitrol is an extended-release naltrexone injection given by a health care provider.7 Alkermes holds its FDA approval. Two other versions appear in FDA records:
- Unbranded kit. Made by Alkermes, distributed by Amneal and sold under Vivitrol's own application, so it is not a generic.8 Its NDC listing starts May 1, 2026.2
- Teva's generic. Approved in 2023 and now listed as discontinued in Drugs@FDA and the Orange Book.1,6
Whether either can be bought, and at what price, is covered under is there a generic Vivitrol? The shot itself has its own Vivitrol guide.
ReVia ended in 2019, and not for safety reasons
ReVia 50 mg tablets were first approved on November 20, 1984. Their labeled uses were alcohol dependence and blocking the effects of opioids.9
- 2018: Teva Women's Health asked FDA to withdraw the approval in a letter dated May 16, 2018.9
- 2019: FDA withdrew it effective May 1, 2019, in one notice covering 16 applications whose holders said the products were no longer marketed.12
- 2025: Hyman, Phelps & McNamara, P.C. filed a citizen petition on September 22, 2025, asking FDA to decide whether ReVia had left the market for safety or effectiveness reasons.9
- 2026: On April 16, 2026, FDA published its answer: ReVia "was not withdrawn for reasons of safety or effectiveness."9
As a result, ReVia stays on the Orange Book's discontinued list, FDA will not start withdrawing generics that refer to it, and new generics can still be approved.9
Depade was a Mallinckrodt brand with no current listing
- Trademark. DEPADE was registered to Mallinckrodt Inc. on November 5, 2002, for "agents to deter the abuse of alcohol or narcotics," with first use on December 20, 2001. The registration was cancelled on June 13, 2009, after no Section 8 declaration was filed.10
- Strengths. The National Library of Medicine's RxNorm lists Depade tablets in 25, 50 and 100 mg, all now marked obsolete. The last Depade codes it records, for 50 mg bottles, end in December 2015.3
- FDA records. No application appears under the Depade name in Drugs@FDA or the Orange Book, and the NDC directory has no Depade listing.1,2,6
Generic tablets carry the name naltrexone hydrochloride
Seven companies hold FDA approvals for generic naltrexone tablets: Accord, Barr, Chartwell, Elite, Novitium, SpecGx and Sun. The approvals date from 1998 to 2017, and all are listed as prescription products.1 "Hydrochloride" names the salt form of naltrexone in the tablet.13
- One strength on the market. All 45 tablet listings in the NDC directory are 50 mg film-coated tablets. They trace to 5 of the 7 approvals.2
- Two strengths on paper. Drugs@FDA also lists 25 mg and 100 mg under SpecGx's approval, but neither has an NDC listing.1,2 For more on the tablet strength, see 50 mg is the only tablet strength.
Cash prices for the generic tablets are on naltrexone cost.
Contrave contains naltrexone but treats weight
Each Contrave tablet holds 8 mg of naltrexone and 90 mg of bupropion, against 50 mg in a standard naltrexone tablet; it is approved for weight management, not addiction, and its label advises against combining it with other naltrexone products.4,13 Its generic status and evidence are on naltrexone and bupropion (Contrave).
Embeda and Troxyca ER were opioid painkillers
Both capsules held an opioid plus naltrexone sealed inside the beads: 0.8 to 4 mg of naltrexone per Embeda capsule and 1.2 to 9.6 mg per Troxyca ER capsule.1 Taken as directed, the naltrexone in Embeda was "intended to have no clinical effect." Crushing or chewing the pellets can release enough naltrexone to set off withdrawal in people dependent on opioids.14,15
- Embeda (morphine and naltrexone) and Troxyca ER (oxycodone and naltrexone) were approved for pain severe enough to need daily, around-the-clock, long-term opioid treatment. Neither was an addiction treatment.14,15
- Both are listed as discontinued. For Embeda, FDA records note a Federal Register determination that it was not discontinued for safety or effectiveness reasons.1,6
Narcan, Suboxone and compounded naltrexone are not naltrexone brands
Narcan is naloxone, an overdose rescue spray, and Suboxone is a brand of buprenorphine, a Schedule III drug; see naltrexone vs naloxone and naltrexone vs Suboxone.16,17 Compounded naltrexone, including low-dose naltrexone, is not FDA-approved (compounded vs generic).5 Neither is any naltrexone implant.
